Rhinelander District Library Reaches Major Fundraising Milestone

The Rhinelander District Library (RDL) and the RDL Foundation are excited to announce a significant milestone in their Capital Campaign, having successfully raised over $1 million towards the Library’s comprehensive renovation and expansion project.

As of March 25, 2025, the campaign has garnered $1,002,172.04 through the remarkable generosity of local residents, businesses, seasonal visitors, and philanthropic foundations. This milestone brings the Library one step closer to its ambitious $7 million goal, set to breathe new life into a historic community institution.

A Legacy of Learning, A Vision for the Future

Established in 1904, the Rhinelander District Library has been a cornerstone of community education and connection for over a century. While previous renovations in 1985 helped modernize the facility, the building now requires critical improvements to remain accessible, functional and safe for future generations.

“This fundraising achievement is more than just a number,” said Virginia Roberts, Director of the Rhinelander District Library. “It represents a decade of careful planning, community dedication, and a shared vision of what our Library can become. We’re not just renovating a building; we’re creating a dynamic space that will serve our community for decades to come.”

Beyond Books: A Community Hub of Opportunity

The proposed renovation goes far beyond structural updates. The project aims to:

  • Expand the Children’s Area to inspire young readers
  • Create quiet workspaces for students and remote professionals
  • Develop flexible meeting spaces for local non-profit groups
  • Enhance accessibility for all community members
  • Preserve the historic building’s architectural integrity

Kim Swisher, RDL Foundation’s fundraising coordinator, highlighted the Library’s evolving role: “Since the Covid-19 pandemic, our Library has experienced significant growth. We’re no longer just a place for books — we’re a vibrant community center offering innovative services like the Library of Things, engaging Children’s programs, and critical outreach to our elderly neighbors.”

Planned Improvements Include:

  • Modernized Children’s Area
  • New meeting spaces
  • Main-level restrooms
  • Elevator replacement
  • ADA-compliant entrances
  • Replacement of aging windows
  • Essential maintenance upgrades

“Every contribution, no matter the size, is an investment in Rhinelander’s future,” Swisher emphasized. “These donations don’t just repair a building — they open doors to learning, connection, and community growth.”
